Jessica Aber, the former U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, was found dead at her home in Alexandria, Virginia, on Saturday morning. She was 43 years old.
At around 9:18 a.m., police received a call about an unresponsive woman at a house on Beverly Drive, a suburb near Washington, D.C. When they arrived, they found Aber dead inside the home.
The police said an investigation is ongoing to find out what caused her death.
The Virginia Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine the official cause and manner of death.
Jessica Aber had a respected career in law. She was nominated by President Joe Biden and became U.S. Attorney in October 2021. She led over 300 prosecutors and staff in handling federal cases in Virginia. She stepped down in January, just before Donald Trump returned to the presidency.
Aber began working as a federal prosecutor in 2009. She handled cases involving financial fraud, public corruption, violent crime, and child exploitation. She studied law at William and Mary Law School and graduated in 2006.
In 2019, she received the Assistant Attorney General’s Award for Exceptional Service from the U.S. Department of Justice.
Current U.S. Attorney Erik Siebert shared a heartfelt message after her death: “We are heartbroken beyond words to learn of the passing of our friend and former colleague, Jessica Aber. She was an incredible leader, mentor, and prosecutor. She set a high standard through her professionalism, kindness, and legal knowledge. Even though her time was short, she made a huge impact.”
Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares also expressed his sadness. He said Aber’s work, especially with the Ceasefire Virginia program, helped save many lives.
Before resigning, Aber said: “It has been an honor beyond measure to serve as U.S. Attorney. I am proud of the work we have done with law enforcement to enforce the law and build trust with the community.”
Jessica Aber was known as a proud Virginian. From high school to college and throughout her career, she served her state with dedication and passion.
Her sudden death has left many shocked and saddened, and people across the state and beyond are remembering her for her powerful contributions to justice and public service.
