that’s the mood across South Africa as Capitec clients face another unexpected app crash this Friday afternoon.
At exactly midday today, users began flooding social media and DownDetector.co.za with complaints that they couldn’t log into the Capitec app. More than 1,400 reports were recorded within the first hour, showing just how widespread the issue is.

Capitec confirmed the problem on their official X (formerly Twitter) account, saying:
“Our team is aware of the situation and working hard to resolve it as quickly as possible. Thank you for your patience, we should be up and running soon!”
But South Africans aren’t having it. From missed transfers to locked-out accounts, users say these frequent outages are starting to affect their trust in the bank. With over 23 million customers, Capitec is one of the biggest banks in the country, but its digital services seem to be its Achilles’ heel.
“Every year, same story. Can’t do anything when the app is down. What's the point of being digital if it’s not reliable?” said a user on X.
Yearly Outages Becoming a Pattern
This isn’t the first time Capitec’s systems have gone haywire. In July 2024, the bank was hit by the global Crowdstrike outage, which disrupted all digital channels. In August 2022, Capitec suffered its worst outage ever and with all mobile, USSD, and internet banking platforms going down for over 40 hours.

Today's outage comes just hours after Capitec launched a new in-app call feature for Apple users, allowing them to call customer care via WiFi. Some users are even speculating whether the update triggered the technical failure.
✅ Latest Tip for Capitec Users: If you're struggling to access your account, try calling the help centre or using USSD where possible. Some services might still be working offline.https://www.xtrafrica.com/world-wide/sassa-grant-payments-in-april-2025%3A-simple-guide-for-south-africans
