General Muhoozi Kainerugaba and Winnie Byanyima, the wife of opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye
Winnie Byanyima, the wife of opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye, has responded to remarks made by General Muhoozi Kainerugaba about her past relationship with President Yoweri Museveni.
The conversation started on February 22, 2025, when Muhoozi, the son of President Museveni, criticized Byanyima on social media. He accused her of interfering with a happy family and said,
"There was NOTHING normal about your relationship with my father. You found a happy home and tried to wreck it. You're a DISASTER of a woman!"
He also claimed that Byanyima was removed from the Museveni household in December 1986. "Mzee kicked you out of the house in December of 1986, dragged you to the car while you were crying, and sent you to your parents," he alleged.
In response, Byanyima addressed the issue on her X account, asking Muhoozi to respect the past she shares with his father. She wrote, "Muhoozi Kainerugaba, IWE MWANA WE…. Yetwaare. I feel it's important to be clear that there's a more complex history between your father and I that we have both chosen to move past with mutual respect.
However, if you continue to present a false narrative, I may need to provide HARD evidence of the facts. I prefer to maintain our dignified approach, but that choice remains yours. I consider this matter closed."
Earlier, Byanyima had spoken about her past relationship with President Museveni during an interview with journalist Canary Mugume on The Next Big Talk. She acknowledged that they had been in a relationship in the past but insisted it was no longer relevant.
"Yes, I did have a relationship with President Museveni a long time ago, but it holds no relevance to today’s conversations, especially not regarding Besigye’s detention," she stated.
Byanyima also explained that she had known Museveni since childhood. "I’ve known him since I was about three years old. He used to visit our home regularly." She emphasized that the relationship ended years ago and should not be part of political debates.
"It was a normal relationship that ended a long time ago. This part of my life is insignificant and should not be dragged into political debates," she said
