Uganda has received a financial boost from China to support its development goals. On Monday, the country’s Finance Minister, Hon. Matia Kasaija, signed a grant agreement worth around Shs. 101.3 billion with the Chinese Ambassador to Uganda, H.E. Zhang Lizhong.
The money will go toward projects that match Uganda’s National Development Goals and the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The support includes both financial and technical help and will be used in important sectors to help the country grow and develop over time.
At the signing event, Minister Kasaija thanked China for its continued support in key areas.“On behalf of the Government of the Republic of Uganda, I want to extend heartfelt gratitude to the Government of the People’s Republic of China for the long-lasting technical and financial support in various sectors ranging from transport, energy, and health, among others,” said Kasaija.
He also asked China to continue supporting Uganda in important areas such as agro-industrialization, solar-powered irrigation, mineral beneficiation, and technology transfer. These areas are important for Uganda’s goal of transforming and industrializing its economy.
The agreement follows discussions that happened during the 2024 Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC). Ambassador Zhang said these talks led to a stronger partnership between the two countries, calling it a Comprehensive Strategic Cooperation Partnership.
Zhang added that both Uganda’s Ministry of Finance and the Chinese Embassy have already picked out specific projects to work on together over the next three years. These projects fall under the 10 partnership actions framework, which aims to push Uganda’s economic progress forward.
Some progress is already visible. Ambassador Zhang mentioned that the first batch of fish maws had already been exported to China. He also said the bamboo plantation and utilization industry is now in the implementation phase. This is seen as a major step in helping Uganda expand its agricultural exports.
China is also helping Uganda in the health sector, especially in the fight against malaria.Zhang said that China would continue its assistance in this area throughout the year, showing the strong relationship between the two countries.
This new grant strengthens the partnership between China and Uganda and shows China's promise to keep investing in Uganda’s development. With the projects moving forward, the cooperation is expected to bring real benefits to Uganda’s economy and its people.
