UEDCL replaces Umeme, vows stable power, fixes faulty transformers, and improves electricity services in Uganda

Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL) has taken over electricity distribution from Umeme. The company says this is a big step for Uganda’s power sector and promises better and more reliable services.

The new Managing Director of UEDCL, Mr. Paul Mwesigwa, said they have already set up new vending systems. These systems are now working well both online and in banks, helping customers easily pay for power.

“Our focus is to make sure everything works smoothly for our customers,” said Mr. Mwesigwa. “Right now, we are working on making the power network more stable.”

Some people have been worried because of recent blackouts in different areas. But UEDCL said they are fixing these problems quickly.

A recent technical check found that 113 transformers were not working. Some of them had been broken for over three weeks. Mr. Mwesigwa said that UEDCL engineers are now fixing those transformers and hopes all of them will be working again before the week ends.

He also mentioned that many power lines are carrying too much load, which causes more problems. “We are getting ready to solve this, and with help from the electricity regulator and cheap financing, we believe the service will keep getting better,” he added.

As UEDCL settles into its new role, the company says it will focus on giving Ugandans better customer care, reliable electricity, and faster services.
