The Uganda Railways Corporation (URC)
The Uganda Railways Corporation (URC) has stopped all passenger train services between Kampala and Mukono from April 6 to April 14, 2025. This is because a section of the railway near Namanve has been damaged.
URC explained that part of the railway track embankment at Namanve failed. This has made the railway line unsafe for use, so they had to stop the trains immediately for safety.
Their technical teams are already working at the site to fix the problem. URC said they are doing everything possible to make sure trains are running again by April 14.
The corporation also said sorry to all passengers and the public and asked people to be patient as they work on the repairs.
A Vital Route for Commuters
The Kampala–Mukono railway line is very important for people who travel every day. Many workers and students use it because it is cheaper and faster than the Kampala–Jinja highway, especially during the busy morning and evening hours.
This train line was brought back recently to help reduce the heavy traffic on the roads. It has helped a lot of people avoid long delays caused by traffic jams. The train offers low prices and runs on a set schedule, which is helpful for daily commuters.
More Pressure on Other Transport Options
Because of the train shutdown, other transport like matatus (minibuses) and boda-bodas are expected to get very crowded. There is no word yet from the authorities about any temporary transport plans to help those affected.
