As the Kawempe North by-election approaches, Dr. Mukasa Mbidde spoke on NBS Television's "Morning Breeze," where he discussed the district's political situation. He pointed out that in most cases, when a constituency loses a leader, the party of the deceased tends to receive sympathy votes. However, he noted that this is not the case in Kawempe North.
Scheduled for March 13, 2025, the by-election has drawn a lot of attention, particularly due to President Museveni's involvement. The president is actively backing the National Resistance Movement (NRM) candidate, Faridah Nambi. Nambi, the daughter of NRM vice-chairman Al-Hajj Moses Kigongo, faces a tough battle in a constituency that has historically favored the opposition.
On the opposition side, the National Unity Platform (NUP) has nominated Elias Luyimbazi Nalukoola as their candidate. Despite the recent passing of Hon. Muhammad Ssegirinya, NUP is determined to keep its influence in Kawempe North.
Dr. Mbidde praised NUP’s efforts, acknowledging their strong campaign strategies in the constituency.
The election has also exposed divisions within Ssegirinya’s family regarding political loyalty. Some relatives support NUP's Nalukoola, while others back NRM's Nambi, showing how complex politics in Kawempe North can be.
Before election day, all nine candidates are campaigning vigorously to win votes and represent the people of the constituency.
Beyond choosing a new representative, the results of this election will also indicate the political shifts occurring in the area.
