Muhoozi Kainerugaba, head of Uganda's military and son of President Yoweri Museveni, said he wanted to harm Bobi Wine, the main opposition leader.
Kainerugaba, often seen as his father’s successor, is known for controversial social media posts. In 2022, he threatened to invade Kenya but later apologized, claiming some posts were meant as jokes.
On Sunday, he posted on X (formerly Twitter) that only his father, whom he called “Mzee,” was stopping him from harming Wine. He wrote, “If Mzee wasn’t there, I’d cut off his head today.”
Wine, whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi, replied that he didn’t take the threat lightly, as there had been past attempts on his life. Kainerugaba then accused Wine of owing money and suggested the government had paid him to weaken the opposition.
Government and military spokespeople declined to comment, but officials have previously said Kainerugaba’s posts are casual and not official policy.
Wine, a musician-turned-politician, is Museveni’s strongest rival. He disputed the 2021 election results, alleging fraud and intimidation. Human rights groups have accused the government of abuses, but officials deny these claims.
