Gen. Muhoozi intensifies crackdown on NUP
General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the Chief of Defence Forces for Uganda People's Defence Force (UPDF), has taken a stronger position against the National Unity Platform (NUP) and its supporters. His recent directives and warnings have targeted the opposition party, sparking concerns among political analysts and human rights advocates.
On January 6, 2025, Gen. Muhoozi called for the immediate arrest of Robert Kyagulanyi, widely known as Bobi Wine. He described him as a "rebel leader" and declared that he is "fair game for elimination."
Days later, on January 16, 2025, he instructed all security agencies to apprehend any NUP or opposition supporters wearing outfits that resemble military uniforms. He stressed that security officers who fail to enforce this directive would be held accountable.
By March 11, 2025, Gen. Muhoozi had issued another strong warning. He stated that police officers who do not act against NUP supporters would be dismissed from service. While commending the Joint Anti-Terrorism Taskforce (JAT) for their operations, he urged them to increase their focus on individuals donning red uniforms linked to NUP.
Additionally, he set a deadline of July 7, instructing young NUP supporters to surrender to the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU). He warned that failure to comply would result in severe consequences, including being classified as rebels and subjected to lethal force.
These actions and statements have led to growing concerns over political freedoms and democracy in Uganda. Many believe that such measures threaten opposition voices and restrict political expression in the country.
