Uganda has received a major financial boost from the French government, with UGX 340 billion set aside for improving water and infrastructure in Kampala. This support was made official through an agreement between Uganda and France.
A large portion of this money will go to the National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) to expand water distribution, especially in areas that do not have enough access. Kampala has been facing water shortages for a long time, and poor drainage has led to frequent flooding and bad sanitation in some parts of the city.
The funds, provided through the French Development Agency (AFD), show France’s commitment to helping Uganda achieve its sustainable development goals. Officials have stated that the money will help improve access to clean water, strengthen drainage systems, and upgrade roads in the city to reduce traffic congestion.
The government has also revealed that part of the money will be used to repair and upgrade important roads to make transport easier. Traffic jams and poor road conditions have been major challenges for businesses and people commuting daily in Kampala.
President Yoweri Museveni’s administration has welcomed this support, calling it an important step in developing Kampala’s urban areas. The Ministry of Finance has assured the public that the funds will be used properly, with close monitoring to ensure the projects are completed efficiently.
However, not everyone is happy about Uganda’s heavy dependence on foreign financial aid for basic infrastructure. Some critics argue that relying too much on external funding raises concerns about the country’s long-term sustainability.
