Opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye has taken legal action by filing a habeas corpus application, requesting the authorities to bring him before the court "dead or alive."
The High Court in Kampala is set to hear the application, which challenges his detention. Dr. Besigye and his aide, Obeid Lutale, have been held at Luzira Prison since their arrest in Nairobi last November. They were later charged with security-related offenses and treachery.
Dr. Besigye's legal team from Lukwago & Co. Advocates argues that his detention is unlawful and violates his constitutional rights. His wife, Ms. Winnie Byanyima, has also spoken out, calling his continued imprisonment a serious injustice.
The Uganda Law Society (ULS) has criticized the delay in the hearing, insisting that habeas corpus cases should be given priority. However, Judiciary public relations officer Mr. Ereemye Mawanda explained that legal procedures require at least three weeks for filing and responses, which caused the delay.
Justice Douglas Karekona Singiza is expected to preside over the hearing. In a related case, the court has also scheduled a habeas corpus hearing for jailed lawyer Eron Kiiza, who was sentenced to nine months by the General Court Martial for contempt of court.
Dr. Besigye’s supporters and legal team remain hopeful that the court will rule in his favor, reinforcing human rights and due process in Uganda.
