The Buganda Kingdom has spoken out against a new map of Uganda that leaves out the kingdom. The leaders say this is not the first time this has happened and believe it is a planned attempt to ignore their importance.
“This is not the first time such an act has happened. In 2018, UBOS released a map that did not include Buganda, and during the Kabaka’s 63rd birthday celebrations at Villa Maria, His Majesty publicly condemned this action,” the statement read.
Israel Kazibwe Kitooke, Buganda’s Minister for Communication, gave a strong response, saying that this act looks like a clear plan to rewrite history and remove Buganda’s value from official records. He reminded the public about the 2018 incident when the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) published a similar map without Buganda.
That year, the Kabaka of Buganda, Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II, used his birthday event in Masaka to speak out. The 63rd birthday celebrations at Villa Maria became a moment for the king to express how disappointed he was by this act.
Kazibwe also mentioned that the Katikkiro (Prime Minister), Charles Peter Mayiga, has often warned people about such moves. He said the Katikkiro keeps encouraging Buganda’s citizens to stay aware and protect the truth about their kingdom.
The latest map, which has spread on social media, shows other cultural kingdoms in Uganda but once again leaves out Buganda. Kazibwe believes this is not a mistake.
“As the spokesperson of Buganda Kingdom, I want to make it clear that this is a deliberate move meant to distract us from our main goals. However, it will not succeed,” Kazibwe stated.
He asked the people of Buganda to stay calm and united. Despite the challenges, he believes the kingdom’s history is strong and cannot be changed by maps or anyone’s actions.
“I want to assure you that no one can erase our history. Buganda is a rock—those who have attempted to tamper with it in the past have faced unexplainable consequences,” he added.
