Dr. Kizza Besigye, the founder of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), is at the center of growing tensions in Ishaka, Bushenyi District, where supporters have flooded the streets calling for his immediate release. They rallied under the hashtag #FreeDrKizzaBesigye as they demanded action from the government, reflecting an increasing public outcry.
The urgency of these calls escalated following distressing news that Besigye's health had severely declined, necessitating his rushed transfer to a hospital. It is believed that his condition deteriorated due to a hunger strike he began last week, leading to serious concerns about his well-being.
In a show of solidarity, Bobi Wine, a prominent pop star turned activist, expressed his dismay on social media. The Uganda Medical Doctors Association also echoed the sentiment, amplifying the call for Besigye's urgent release and medical care.
The public's alarm intensified last Friday during a court appearance where Besigye seemed extremely frail, having difficulty moving and speaking. His lawyers, who had visited him in prison, confirmed the grave state of his health, which added fuel to the already fiery public demand for justice.
As the movement gains momentum with more people voicing their support on social media and in demonstrations, FDC members continue to press for broader support from religious leaders and all Ugandans. They remain steadfast in their fight for justice in Uganda, signaling that they are not prepared to back down.
