Government Allocates Funds for Livestock Vaccination Program
MOROGORO—The Minister for Livestock and Fisheries, Dr. Ashatu Kijaji, announced a 28.1bn/- budget for the first phase of a five-year livestock vaccination program starting this year. The program aims to protect consumer health, sustain international livestock markets, and boost the national economy.
Speaking in Kilosa District, Dr. Kijaji highlighted the importance of vaccinating livestock and identifying them as part of the program's initial phase, which runs until 2029 with a total budget of 216bn/-. She emphasized the President's commitment to supporting livestock keepers and called on extension officers to assist them consistently.
During her visit, Dr. Kijaji inaugurated a 4,000-acre grazing farm in Mbwade Village and launched fodder planting in Mandela Village. She encouraged livestock keepers to grow their own fodder, dig water wells, and adopt modern farming practices to reduce conflicts with farmers and improve productivity.
The minister also noted government efforts to modernize the livestock sector, such as providing motorcycles and tablets to extension officers for better rural outreach. She aims to increase the sector’s GDP contribution from under 10% to at least 10% by 2030 through better farming practices and high-quality feed.
Dr. Kijaji urged Morogoro to lead as a model region for modern livestock farming, with improved infrastructure, breeds, and demonstration farms. She stressed environmental protection and land-use planning for sustainable farming.
Regional leaders and livestock keepers welcomed the initiatives, with calls for more resources and support to boost local and international competitiveness.
