Bayer Leverkusen head coach Xabi Alonso has said he passed up the chance to replace Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool, choosing instead to concentrate on winning the league with his current team.

Alonso was one of the names linked to the Liverpool job in March, following Klopp’s announcement of his departure. However, he decided to stay with the Bundesliga champions for at least another season.

“I saw the links to replace Klopp, but my focus was on winning the league,” Alonso said. “We were working only on that, and I didn’t negotiate with any clubs.”

Liverpool eventually appointed Arne Slot, and they are now at the top of the Premier League after 10 games.
