South Africa's national football captain, Ronwen Williams, has enjoyed an impressive year on both domestic and international fronts, racking up accolades with regularity. However, his recent nomination for the prestigious Yashin Trophy has left him "numb" with disbelief.

The 32-year-old Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper has been shortlisted for the Yashin Trophy, awarded to the world’s best goalkeeper as part of the renowned Ballon d'Or ceremony. This makes Williams the first African-based player ever nominated for the award, which is named after Soviet Union legend Lev Yashin.

“I can’t recall if I dropped my phone. I got a knot in my stomach and literally went numb,”

Williams told BBC Sport Africa.

“When I saw the Ballon d’Or page, I couldn’t believe it. I don’t know if I was excited, happy, or crying—it was so surreal. I try not to think about it too much because it makes me emotional.”

The nomination carries extra significance for Williams, as it comes during a period where South Africa’s men’s football team has struggled to achieve international success. He hopes his recognition will serve as inspiration for his fellow South African footballers.

“I’ve achieved so much in my career, but I don’t think this will ever be replaced,”

said Williams.

“This nomination could open doors for South Africans, showing we can aim higher and dream bigger. We’ve got the talent and ability, but we often hold ourselves back. To me, this feels like a win already, even if I don’t make the top three.”
