Victor Osimhen may be compelled to forgo his protective face mask during the upcoming high-stakes derby between Galatasaray and Fenerbahçe, as reported by Soccernet.ng. This weekend's clash, led by Fenerbahçe's coach Jose Mourinho, is set to be a crucial fixture in the Turkish Süper Lig, highlighting the fierce rivalry between the two top Turkish clubs.

Osimhen, who has become a key player for Galatasaray following his transfer, initially donned the face mask after a severe facial injury incurred during his tenure at Napoli. The injury resulted from a collision with Inter Milan's Milan Skriniar, necessitating surgery that involved the insertion of six plates and 18 screws into Osimhen's face.

Despite the protective intent of the mask, controversy has arisen after recent incidents, including a collision that resulted in a concussion for Çaykur Rizespor player Khusniddin Alikulov. This has prompted Fenerbahçe supporters to urge the Turkish Football Federation to ban the mask, citing potential risks to other players.

Former referee Fırat Aydınus commented on a Turkish television program about the conditions under which referees might prohibit such protective gear, emphasizing safety concerns for both the wearer and opponents.

Questions have also been raised regarding the mask’s metal components and their role in Alikulov’s injury. However, Osimhen’s performance remains vital for Galatasaray's aspirations, both in the league and on the European stage.

Osimhen's track record against Mourinho, with whom he clashed during Mourinho's time at AS Roma, includes three goals in six matches, underscoring his effectiveness.

As Galatasaray prepares for a match that could set the tone for their season, all eyes will be on Osimhen, as he navigates the challenge of competing in one of Turkey's most significant football encounters—whether he wears his mask or not. This derby not only promises to be a determinant of early-season dominance but also a measure of Galatasaray's championship and European ambitions.
