Team Nigeria Returns Empty-Handed from Paris 2024 Olympics Despite N12 Billion Investment

Despite a substantial investment of Twelve billion naira (N12 billion) by the Federal Government of Nigeria, Team Nigeria has officially ended its 2024 Olympic campaign without securing a single medal. The disappointing outcome marks the country's worst performance since the London 2012 Olympics, as reported by BSNSports.com.ng.

Senator John Enoh, Nigeria’s Minister of Sports, acknowledged the team's poor performance, which fell far short of expectations. Although Team Nigeria entered the Paris Games with high hopes, having shown promise in qualifying events, they were unable to replicate their continental success on the Olympic stage.

The Nigerian contingent competed in 12 events, with standout athletes like Tobi Amusan, Ese Brume, Blessing Oborodudu, Ruth Usoro, Pristina Ochonogor, and Ogazi among those who briefly raised the nation's hopes. However, their efforts ultimately fell short of the podium.

The final blow came when Hannah Reuben, Nigeria’s last athlete in the competition, was defeated 5-2 by Mongolia's Davaanasan Amar Enkh in the Wrestling 76kg category on Saturday, sealing Nigeria's fate at the Games.

As Nigeria reflects on its Paris 2024 experience, attention now turns to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics, where the nation will aim for a significant improvement.

South Sudan's Olympic basketball dreams were dashed in a controversial loss to Serbia. Coach Royal Ivey and President Luol Deng criticized the officiating, highlighting disparities in free throws and fouls. Despite the setback, they remain determined to come back stronger.
