The Moroccan futsal team recently saw its extraordinary 50-match unbeaten streak come to an end, a run that captivated the sport and stunned the world. This historic feat was achieved despite facing heavyweights like Argentina, Italy, France, and Iran. While Spain eventually ended Morocco's undefeated cycle with a 4-2 victory in Rabat, the North African nation rebounded swiftly, exacting revenge with a 4-1 win just days later.

Soufian Charraoui, the standout performer of this incredible run, sat down with FIFA to discuss Morocco's rise to futsal dominance, the team’s incredible form, and the passion for futsal that’s sweeping across the country. Charraoui, who was the top scorer at the CAF Futsal Africa Cup of Nations and a key figure in Morocco’s success, attributes the team's success to the vision and dedication of coach Hicham Dguig.

The Unbeaten Streak That Shook the Sport

Morocco's unbeaten run began in November 2022, a streak few would have predicted to reach such dizzying heights. Despite battling powerhouses like Argentina, Italy, and France, Morocco managed to go 50 games without a loss. Charraoui believes the streak was a result of relentless training, teamwork, and the leadership of coach Dguig, who has been at the helm for over a decade.

“We never thought we would go 50 games unbeaten. It’s hard to believe, but it shows the hard work that has gone in over the years,”

Charraoui reflected.

Coach Hicham Dguig: The Architect of Success

Charraoui praised Dguig’s influence on the team, likening him to a father figure who has guided the players through thick and thin.

"He’s an amazing man who gets the best out of us. We’re like his children,"

said Charraoui. Under Dguig's guidance, Morocco has developed a distinct, beautiful style of play that has captivated fans and helped elevate futsal's popularity in the country.

Futsal Fever in Morocco

Futsal has become a sensation in Morocco, with fans passionately supporting the national team wherever they go. Charraoui believes the team’s success, combined with their exciting style of play, has ignited a futsal revolution in the country.

“It’s absolutely crazy. Moroccans are very passionate about every sport, and futsal has made them even more so. Everyone wants to take a picture with us, and it’s special,”

he shared.

Personal Triumphs and Future Aspirations

On a personal level, Charraoui is in the form of his life. His decision to return to Morocco to train full-time under Dguig has paid off, as he delivered standout performances at the Futsal AFCON and against Spain. Now, Charraoui has his sights set on Uzbekistan 2024, where he hopes to help Morocco make history by winning the FIFA Futsal World Cup™.

Despite the setback of losing key players Youssef Jouad and Bilal Bakkali to injury, Charraoui remains optimistic.

"They’re two of the best players in the world, but we have other great players stepping up. We beat Spain without them, and they’re always with us in spirit,"

he said.

The Road to Uzbekistan 2024

As Morocco gears up for the World Cup, Charraoui remains confident in his team’s ability to compete with the best. He acknowledges the strength of teams like Spain, Brazil, and Portugal but believes that Morocco has what it takes to win the title.

"We’ve improved so much since the last World Cup. We’ll do everything to stay focused and avoid mistakes. I believe we can win,"

he asserted.

Morocco’s group stage clash against Portugal promises to be one of the tournament's highlights. Charraoui admires Portugal’s tactical strength, defensive solidity, and attacking prowess, but he remains confident in his team’s chances.

"Portugal is an incredible team, but Morocco against Portugal will be an amazing game for the fans,"

he added.

Drawing Inspiration from Morocco’s World Cup Success

Morocco’s remarkable performance at the FIFA World Cup in Qatar, where the football team reached the semi-finals, continues to inspire Charraoui and his teammates.

"We talk about it a lot. It showed that hard work and belief can achieve great things. Now, we want to do something special for all Moroccans who support us,"

he concluded.

As Morocco heads into Uzbekistan 2024, hopes are high that Charraoui and his team can build on their historic achievements and bring futsal glory to the nation.
