Former Chelsea star, John Mikel Obi, has praised Atalanta winger Ademola Lookman for his decision to commit to the Nigerian national team, lauding the timely choice as a reflection of the player's strong dedication to his roots.

Lookman, born in England to Nigerian parents, initially represented England at youth level and was part of the victorious 2017 FIFA U-20 World Cup squad. However, in February 2022, after receiving approval from FIFA to switch allegiances, Lookman officially joined the Super Eagles and has since become a key player for the Nigerian team.

Speaking on BeIN Sports, Mikel emphasized the importance of African-born players embracing their heritage early in their careers rather than delaying their decisions.

"Players often wait too long before choosing to represent their African roots. I believe it shouldn’t be that way,"

Mikel remarked.

“If you’ve made up your mind to play for a country like England, France, or Germany, that’s fine. But if you’re not called up, it’s a choice you’ve made. Don’t wait until you’re 26 or 28—make the decision at 20 when you’re still at your peak. African nations shouldn’t be a second option."

Lookman’s swift transition to Nigeria has paid off, with Mikel applauding his stellar performances since the switch.

“Ademola made the right call by committing to Nigeria early. He had an outstanding season and continues to show his quality. He’s a fantastic player.”

Now an integral part of Atalanta and a contender for the CAF African Player of the Year award, Lookman’s decision to represent Nigeria has clearly been justified, according to Mikel.
