Manchester United captain, Bruno Fernandes, has been handed a three-match ban following his red card in Sunday's Premier League clash against Tottenham Hotspur. The Portuguese midfielder was dismissed in the 42nd minute for a high challenge on James Maddison.

The suspension will see Fernandes miss Manchester United’s upcoming league fixture against Aston Villa next Sunday. Following the international break, he will also be unavailable for matches against Brentford and West Ham.

Despite the ban in domestic competitions, Fernandes remains eligible to feature in Manchester United's Europa League match against FC Porto on Thursday.

This red card marks a significant moment for the 29-year-old, as it is his first since joining the club. He also becomes just the fourth United captain to be sent off in a Premier League match at Old Trafford, following the likes of Roy Keane, Nemanja Vidic, and Wayne Rooney.

Current State of Manchester United

Fernandes' absence comes at a challenging time for Manchester United, with the team struggling to find consistency under manager Erik ten Hag. United’s Premier League campaign has been marked by inconsistent performances, leading to mounting pressure as they aim to secure a top-four finish. The team is also dealing with defensive injuries and misfiring forwards, exacerbating the current crisis.

Fernandes’ leadership and creativity have been pivotal for United, and his suspension is a blow to the club’s efforts to regain form in both domestic and European competitions.
