Former Super Eagles coach, Gernot Rohr, has shared new insights into the extended efforts it took to secure Ademola Lookman’s decision to switch allegiance from England to Nigeria, as reported by OwngoalNigeria.com.
Lookman, who has emerged as a key player for the Super Eagles and a top contender for the African Player of the Year award, had previously represented England at various youth levels, including the 2017 U20 World Cup, where he was part of the victorious squad.
Rohr, reflecting on Lookman’s rise, revealed that convincing the forward to commit to Nigeria was a process that spanned nearly two years. Unfortunately, by the time Lookman’s switch was approved, Rohr was no longer in charge of the Super Eagles.
"The discussions began in 2020, but the official approval came in 2021, after I had already left my role as Nigeria's coach. He was on my provisional list for AFCON, but we were still awaiting clearance. The final approval arrived in 2022, just after the tournament in Cameroon,"
Rohr, now coach of Benin Republic, explained.
"I’m happy with his progress, even though he’s scored twice against my team,"
he added.
Rohr also highlighted that Lookman had been involved with England’s senior national setup for some time, and the decision to switch wasn’t immediate.
"We had discussions with his representatives and family members, and it took nearly two years. I’m certain he doesn’t regret his decision now."
