A team of security operatives in Enugu State successfully neutralized four armed individuals believed to be part of the banned Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its militia, the Eastern Security Network (ESN). The team made up of the Nigerian Army, Police, and DSS, recovered a cache of weapons, though some suspects fled into the nearby bush, reportedly injured.
The operatives intercepted the group early in the morning at Eha Alumona in Nsukka Local Government Area as they were planning attacks across parts of the state, including the metropolis. An ESN commander wanted and known for operating from neighboring states, was also captured after an intense standoff. He later led the team to their hideouts, where weapons, charms, and dangerous items were found.
Two security personnel sustained minor injuries in the encounter but are now in stable condition. Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah previously pledged to rid the state of criminal activity through reforms, including the establishment of the Distress Response Squad (DRS) and an enhanced Command and Control Center equipped with surveillance and modern technology for better threat response.
Meanwhile, the Imo State Police Command alleged that IPOB/ESN was behind the Tuesday bombing at Orlu International Market. In this incident, two individuals were killed while attempting to plant an Improvised Explosive Device (IED), injuring others nearby.
According to police spokesperson Henry Okoye, “two young men, suspected to be members of the proscribed IPOB/ESN, were carrying an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) on a motorcycle with the intention of planting it at Orlu International Market, near Mbari Okporo.” However, the device detonated prematurely, killing them instantly and preventing a larger tragedy.
