Kenya is emerging as a key player in shifting the balance of power in East Africa, favoring Washington over its global rivals. President William Ruto's recent three-day State visit to the US solidified this position, resulting in several multimillion-dollar deals in infrastructure and security.

Ruto’s administration, in the past 20 months, has leaned closer to Washington, a move that now seems to be paying off. These deals highlight Nairobi’s growing importance to the US, which views Kenya as a strategic partner in the region.

This development presents a challenge to US rivals like China and Russia, who have previously held significant sway in East Africa. China's influence, built through extensive infrastructure projects and cultural initiatives, may face stronger competition.

While the US may not match China’s infrastructure investments, it offers Kenya an alternative partnership free from some of the burdens that have accompanied Chinese deals.

By aligning more closely with the US, Kenya is poised to play a central role in the geopolitical dynamics of East Africa, enhancing its own stature on the global stage.
