The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that more than one million children are at risk of acute malnutrition in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) due to escalating violence and displacement. The conflict, driven by the Rwanda-backed M23 militia, has led to a worsening humanitarian crisis in eastern DRC, with 2.7 million people displaced in North Kivu alone.

In addition to the conflict, severe flooding, landslides, and long-standing regional tensions have exacerbated the situation, leaving around 25 million people in need of humanitarian aid, according to the WHO.

Adelheid Marschang, WHO's Senior Emergency Officer, highlighted that without immediate intervention, over one million children could face acute malnutrition. This condition not only poses severe health risks but also increases vulnerability to infections and diseases, requiring sustained treatment.

The WHO has recorded over 20,000 cholera cases and 60,000 measles cases this year, though actual numbers are likely higher due to limited surveillance. Humanitarian efforts are further hindered by military presence, bureaucratic obstacles, and roadblocks, severely restricting access to aid and health facilities.

The urgent call to action emphasizes the dire need for addressing basic needs in the DRC to prevent a deepening crisis and protect the millions of vulnerable children affected by the ongoing conflict and displacement.
