But this has failed to appease some demonstrators, who have continued to call for him to step down, using the hashtag #RutoMustGo and staging smaller rallies across Kenyan cities.

President William Ruto

Kenyan President William Ruto has dismissed nearly his entire cabinet following weeks of deadly protests against his proposed $2 billion tax increase. Announcing plans to form a "broad-based government," Ruto seeks to address public discontent and stabilize the nation.

The protests, driven largely by young Kenyans, escalated into violent clashes, leading to the partial burning of parliament. In response to the crisis, Ruto abandoned the tax hikes and began consultations for a new government.

Excluded from the dismissals are Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi and Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. Ruto cited the need for "radical programs" to tackle Kenya's debt, boost employment, and combat corruption.

Despite efforts to engage with protesters, including hosting an event on X with young Kenyans, calls for Ruto's resignation continue under the hashtag #RutoMustGo.

Kenya's public debt stands at 10 trillion shillings ($78 billion), about 70% of its GDP. The government's borrowing plans will increase the fiscal deficit from 3.3% to 4.6%, further straining the economy.
