Trust in the Uganda Human Rights Commission (UHRC) is eroding among opposition politicians, who cite unresolved cases and concerns over the commission's independence and impartiality.

National Unity Platform (NUP) President Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, known as Bobi Wine, recently withdrew a 2018 case involving the blockade of his concerts and the detention of his music equipment, citing inefficiency and perceived bias. Despite a five-year wait, the case was only heard for the first time recently.

"This commission cannot hear it fairly," Kyagulanyi stated in a heated exchange with UHRC Chairperson Mariam Wangadiya.

Dr. Kiiza Besigye, a former presidential candidate, also highlighted the commission's inefficiency. His case, filed in 2015 following multiple arrests, remains unresolved nearly a decade later. Similarly, Ingrid Turinawe of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) has seen little progress on her 2017 complaint about violent arrest and sexual assault by security personnel.

Opposition leaders argue that the UHRC’s slow processes and perceived governmental influence undermine its credibility.

"The commission’s failure to handle cases involving opposition figures promptly and impartially calls into question its role as a fair arbiter," Besigye said.

To regain trust, critics suggest the UHRC must demonstrate greater independence, expedite case resolutions, and ensure fair treatment for all citizens, irrespective of political affiliation.
