Mali's ruling junta has reauthorised the activities of political parties and political associations that were suspended earlier this year. This suspension, initiated in April, was justified by accusations that political parties were engaging in "sterile discussions" and "subversion."

The government, dominated by the military leaders who took power in a 2020 coup, announced the decision on Wednesday. "The government decided to lift the suspension that barred political parties and the activities of political associations," stated the council of ministers.

Colonel Assimi Goita, head of the military government, previously defended the suspension, arguing that the political parties' actions posed a danger to an ongoing national "dialogue" concerning Mali's political future. The suspension occurred amid protests from political parties against the junta's decision to extend their stay in power beyond the March 2024 deadline for returning to civilian rule.

Despite the boycott from the main parties and what remains of the opposition, the national dialogue proceeded with regime supporters. In May, these supporters recommended that the military remain in power for an additional two to five years and suggested that the current head of the junta be eligible to run in future presidential elections.
