Greek coastguards sink African migrants overboard to deaths, witnesses say

Greek law allows all migrants seeking asylum to register their claim on several of the islands at special registration centres.
But our interviewees - who we contacted with the help of migrant support body Consolidated Rescue Group - said they were apprehended before they could get to these centres.

Witnesses have accused the Greek coastguard of causing migrant deaths in the Mediterranean, with allegations of deliberate actions leading to fatalities.


The BBC’s investigation, supported by eyewitness accounts, suggests a pattern of forced returns and abandonment at sea, resulting in at least 43 deaths from May 2020 to 2023.
