FIFA President Gianni Infantino honored the victims of the 1993 air crash involving the Zambia national team during his inaugural visit to Zambia. The tragic incident occurred when a plane carrying the team to a FIFA World Cup™ qualifier in Senegal crashed shortly after refueling in Gabon, claiming the lives of all 30 passengers, including 18 players.

Infantino, accompanied by FIFA Secretary General Mattias Grafstrom, visited Heroes' Acre, a memorial site for the crash victims. They laid a wreath and presented special shirts bearing the names of the deceased players to their relatives, symbolizing FIFA's enduring support and remembrance.

During his visit, Infantino also inaugurated a new accommodation center aimed at supporting Zambia's national women's and youth teams. He was welcomed by Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) President Andrew Kamanga and visited Embassy Park, the resting place of former Zambian presidents.

Reflecting on his visit, Infantino expressed his admiration for Zambia's passion for football:

"My first visit to Zambia was very fulfilling, and I felt right at home among this country's welcoming, football-loving people. It was fantastic to see everyone speak the language of football and unity. Our sport has a special place here in Zambia, and football is certainly on the rise."

FAZ President Andrew Kamanga added,

"We were honored to host President Infantino. The FIFA president took time to engage personally with the families of the heroes, making it a memorable visit."

In addition to paying respects at Heroes' Acre, Infantino met with President Hakainde Hichilema to discuss football development and its positive societal impact. He also highlighted Zambia's historic 4-0 victory over Italy at the 1988 Olympic Games football tournament.

Infantino's itinerary included a courtesy visit to Elvis Nkandu, the Minister of Arts, Youth, and Sports, underscoring FIFA's commitment to fostering football growth and unity in Zambia.
