The European Union has imposed sanctions on six individuals involved in the ongoing conflict in Sudan between the Sudanese military and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The EU Council announced these measures on Monday, targeting key figures responsible for the violence that has devastated the country.

Among those sanctioned is a general commanding the RSF in West Darfur, who the EU Council accuses of committing atrocities, instigating ethnically motivated killings, sexual violence, and the looting and burning of communities.

The sanctions also target the RSF's financial adviser and a prominent tribal leader of the Mahamid clan, known for his affiliation with the RSF in West Darfur.

On the Sudanese military side, the sanctions affect the director of Defense Industry Systems and the commander of the Sudanese Air Force. These individuals are held responsible for the "indiscriminate aerial bombing of densely populated residential areas," according to the EU Council. Additionally, former Sudanese Minister of Foreign Affairs Ali Ahmed Karti Mohamed has been listed.

The six individuals will face an asset freeze and a travel ban across the 27-nation European Union. These sanctions aim to pressure those contributing to the conflict and human rights violations in Sudan, urging a resolution to the civil war that has caused widespread suffering.
