In an exceptional display of endurance and speed, Kenyan long-distance runner Asbel Rutto crossed the finish line of the Rome marathon with a groundbreaking time, establishing a new record and eclipsing his previous best by a significant margin.
Rutto completed the marathon with a time of 2 hours, 6 minutes, and 23.61 seconds, carving his name in the annals of the event's history. His remarkable achievement placed him well ahead of his peers, marking a significant triumph in his athletic career. The Kenyan dominance was further asserted by Brian Kispang, who took the second place with a gap of one and a half minutes behind Rutto, and Sila Kiptoo, who completed the Kenyan sweep in the top three positions of the marathon.
On the women's side, the Kenyan prowess in long-distance running was once again on full display as Ivyne Lagat reached the pinnacle of victory. Lagat's winning time was recorded at 2 hours, 24 minutes, and 35.36 seconds, which saw her leading the race over Lydia Simiyu, another Kenyan athlete who finished slightly over 30 seconds later.
Completing the podium for the women's race was Ethiopia's Emebet Niguse, who claimed third place, sealing a powerful East African presence at the prestigious event. The outstanding performances of these athletes highlight the strength and depth of long-distance running talent in the region.
