Macharia Margaret Nduta, 37, has been sentenced to death in Vietnam.

A Shocking Verdict and A Life Hanging in the Balance. On March 7, 2025, the world learned of the devastating fate of Macharia Margaret Nduta, a 37-year-old Kenyan woman, who was sentenced to death in Vietnam for drug trafficking.

The court found her guilty of smuggling over 2kg of cocaine through Tân Sơn Nhất International Airport in Ho Chi Minh City.

Her arrest, dating back to July 2023, unraveled a tragic story, but Nduta claimed she was a mere courier, unknowingly carrying a modified suitcase for a man identified only as "John" from Kenya. She was promised $1,300 (Sh167,000) for her role.

Despite her defense, the Vietnamese authorities dismissed her claims, insisting that she bore full responsibility under the country’s strict drug laws, which mandate the death penalty for anyone trafficking over 600 grams of heroin or cocaine.

Kenyan Government Takes Action

A Call for Urgent Intervention: The shocking news triggered immediate concern back home. On March 15, 2025, during a parliamentary session, Murang'a County Woman Representative Sabina Chege passionately called for urgent government intervention. She urged the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to contact Nduta’s family and push for diplomatic action.

In response, National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula directed the Defense, Intelligence, and Foreign Relations Committee to investigate and report back to parliament.

"The committee should reach out to the Ministry immediately because this is a death sentence to a Kenyan."  - Sabina Chege.

Recognizing the lack of awareness among Kenyans traveling abroad, she also called for government education programs on how citizens can contact embassies when in trouble.

Meanwhile, in Vietnam, Nduta remained behind bars, awaiting execution as her case gained national attention.

Just a day later, on March 16, 2025, a critical diplomatic move unfolded. Kenya’s Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary (PS) Korir Sing’oei reached out to Vietnamese Deputy Minister Nguyen Minh Hang in an attempt to halt Nduta’s execution, which was reportedly just hours away.

“I conveyed to Madam Hang the anxiety of the Kenyan people on the impending execution of our national and reiterated our request for a stay of execution to allow our two countries to find a path to resolving the issue.”  - Sing’oei.

Vietnamese authorities acknowledged Kenya’s petition, giving a glimmer of hope that the execution might be reconsidered. Kenya’s mission in Bangkok was actively monitoring the case.

Meanwhile, Senator Richard Onyonka had also appealed directly to President William Ruto, urging him to intervene and request clemency or repatriation. He called upon international human rights organizations to step in, emphasizing the urgency of diplomatic intervention.

A Story of Desperation

In just over a week, Macharia Margaret Nduta’s case escalated from a court verdict to a diplomatic standoff.  What began as a harsh sentence for drug trafficking quickly evolved into a matter of national urgency, triggering government intervention and diplomatic negotiations at the highest levels.

Her story sheds light on the ruthless global war on drugs, the perils of international trafficking, and the unforgiving laws of foreign nations. As the Kenyan government scrambles to secure a last-minute reprieve, the nation watches with bated breath, hoping for a miracle that could save her life.

Will the diplomatic pressure be enough? Will Vietnam reconsider her execution?
