George Oduor, the man who walked quietly beside former Prime Minister Raila Odinga for more than 30 years, has passed away. Many Kenyans knew him as the tall, calm man always close to "Baba" but few knew just how important he was to Odinga and the Jaramogi family.
A Bodyguard, A Friend, A Brother
Oduor was more than just a bodyguard. He was a trusted aide, a quiet adviser, and a loyal servant to the Odinga family since the 1980s. From political rallies to high-level meetings, George was always there watching, guarding, and standing strong.
“We have stood, fallen, and risen together,” Raila said while mourning.“George was a calm, confident, and very professional man. A dependable rock.”
A Life of Service
George Oduor served under Jaramogi Oginga Odinga and later became a key member of Raila Odinga’s inner circle. For decades, he protected Raila through Kenya’s most difficult and dangerous political moments.
He was trained in VIP protection both in Kenya and abroad, earning the respect of many as one of the most reliable men in Kenyan politics.
“Being Baba’s bodyguard is not easy. George did it with quiet grace and full dedication,” Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna shared.
Loved by Many
Leaders from across the country have sent their condolences. Among them were Kileleshwa MCA Robert Alai, ODM’s communications head Philip Etale, and MP Samuel Atandi.
“George gave us brotherly advice. He was a mentor,” Alai said.“A soldier who saw it all, a man of all seasons,” said MP Atandi.
His loss is deeply felt, not just by Raila’s team, but also by many young leaders who looked up to him.
Quiet Strength, Public Impact
Oduor’s face appeared in many photos and videos over the years. Though he never spoke publicly, his presence was always felt. He was often the first line of defense when Raila faced danger — during campaigns, protests, and public rallies.
For those close to Odinga, George was family. He stood in the background, but his work was front-line.
Final Goodbye
George Oduor died at a hospital in Nairobi after being ill for two weeks. He leaves behind his wife, Carol George, family, and a legacy of loyalty and duty that few can match.
“I will miss George. So will many others. We offer Mama Ida’s and our family’s deep condolences,” Raila said.
