The DRC warns it may ban TikTok nationwide

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is considering banning TikTok in its country, following the United States' decision to prohibit the Chinese social media platform. The U.S. officially enforced this ban on Sunday, January 19, 2025, as announced on American radio.

Christian Bosembe, the president of the Higher Council of Audiovisual Communication (CSAC), has stated that if TikTok does not address the concerns raised by the Congolese authorities, it will face suspension in the DRC. He emphasized that despite repeated warnings and complaints, TikTok has not taken necessary actions, posing risks to the country's youth, internal security, and digital sovereignty. If no changes are made, the DRC will have no choice but to implement measures similar to those of the United States.

Bosembe pointed out that the U.S. ban, which affects more than 170 million TikTok users, highlights serious concerns regarding national security, privacy, and data protection. He criticized the lack of transparency and control over the platform, which allows these issues to persist.

Additionally, he expressed deep concern over TikTok's role in the DRC, where it has reportedly been used to recruit people into armed groups. He condemned this as a dangerous form of propaganda that encourages criminal activities and provides a platform for extremists to exploit young people. In a message shared on social media, he stated that this situation amounts to an endorsement of terrorism, which must be strongly opposed.

Furthermore, Bosembe has urged all digital platforms to engage in open discussions with Congolese institutions. He stressed the need to establish effective mechanisms that regulate online content, protect citizens' personal data, and promote ethical use of social media in the country.
