A village chief, his wife and children killed by Rwandan soldiers in Nyiragongo
According to Beto.cd, at least five people were killed on the night of Monday to Tuesday, February 10, in Nyiragongo territory, near Goma in North Kivu province. The attack was allegedly carried out by suspected M23 rebels and members of the Rwandan army.
Sources indicate that the victims included the village chief of Kiziba 2, his wife, and their four children. These individuals were brutally murdered by armed assailants whose motives remain unclear. A witness contacted by the Nyiragongo Youth Council reported that the perpetrators were dressed in uniforms associated with the RDF/M23.
It is believed that Chief Kimanuka was specifically targeted due to his refusal to cooperate with the rebels, a stance that may have led to this tragic act. A local resident described the attack as causing widespread fear and distress among the community.
This violence follows a recent statement from the administrator appointed by the rebels, who claimed that security would be a priority. However, this assurance is perceived by many as a deceptive tactic aimed at instilling fear and further destabilizing the civilian population.
This marks the first recorded mass killing in the region, which is under full rebel control. The prevailing insecurity has left residents in a state of terror, as violence, including assassinations and kidnappings, has become a means of settling disputes.
