On Monday, January 6, 2025, a ceremony was held at Camp Konkolo in Kinshasa to officially hand over command of the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC). The event was attended by the country's president, Félix-Antoine Tshisekedi.
Lieutenant General Jules Banza Mwilambwe took over as the new leader of the FARDC, replacing General Christian Tshiwewe, who has now been appointed as an adviser to the presidency.
This leadership change comes at a critical time. The FARDC, along with young Wazalendo fighters, are battling the M23 rebels, who are supported by Rwanda. The rebels have been gaining ground in the eastern part of the country. Over the weekend, they captured Masisi Centre, the main town of Masisi territory in North Kivu Province.
President Félix-Antoine Tshisekedi has recently made significant changes within the army. Many officers have been reassigned, especially in the eastern region, which has been plagued by war for more than 30 years.
