General Christian Tshiwewe officially handed over the leadership of the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC) to Lieutenant General Banza Mwilambwe Jules. The ceremony took place on Monday, January 6, 2025, at Camp Kokolo and was led by the Head of State.
In his speech, General Tshiwewe talked about the country’s current security challenges. He encouraged his successor to stay loyal, be resilient, make sacrifices, and work closely with the people to handle the issues affecting the DRC. These challenges include aggression from Rwanda and the actions of local and foreign armed groups.
“You are taking this role during a difficult time for our country,” said Tshiwewe. “We face aggression from Rwanda, community conflicts, and armed group activities in the east. With your skills and leadership, I believe you will work hard to tackle these security problems. To succeed, you need loyalty, resilience, and strong collaboration with the people who want peace and development.”
Tshiwewe also asked all FARDC units to support General Banza Mwilambwe in his new role.
This leadership change happens as violence continues to rise in eastern DRC. The M23 rebel group has advanced, especially in the Lubero area of North Kivu. Despite a ceasefire since August 4, 2024, fighting between M23 and other armed groups persists. M23 has taken over more areas, including Pinga in Walikale, and even set up its own administration there, according to the group’s political leader, Bertrand Bisimwa.
General Banza Mwilambwe takes charge as the government faces pressure for direct talks with M23 and other groups. Meanwhile, international organizations, like MONUSCO, continue to report human rights violations in the region.
