DRC: MONUSCO Condemns Ceasefire Violation and M23 Expansion

The attack by the March 23 Movement (M23) on January 2, 2025, has been strongly condemned by Ms. Bintou Keita, the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Head of MONUSCO.
This incident led to the deaths of at least seven civilians and caused tens of thousands of people to flee their homes, worsening the already severe humanitarian crisis in eastern DRC.
MONUSCO has stated that this attack violates the ceasefire agreement signed between the DRC and Rwanda on July 30, 2024. It is reported that the M23, allegedly backed by Rwanda, took control of Masisi-Center, a key area in North Kivu, on January 4.
Ms. Keita described this escalation of violence as a "tragic turning point" and reiterated the need to respect the territorial integrity of the DRC. She called on all involved parties to support the peace process led by Angolan President João Lourenço under the Luanda framework.
"This violence, which severely affects civilians, must stop immediately," she said.
MONUSCO emphasized its commitment to promoting peace, security, and stability in the DRC.
Ms. Keita urged all actors in the conflict to work towards a peaceful and lasting resolution.
