Colonel Michel Rukunda, known as Makanika killed in Drone Strikes
Several reports have confirmed the elimination of Colonel Michel Rukunda, known as Makanika, leader of the Twirwaneho rebel group. The attack was carried out by a precision drone strike targeting the group's camp in Gakangara, located in the Ngandja sector of Fizi Territory, South Kivu.
FARDC forces dealt a decisive blow to the Twirwaneho militia, neutralizing its leader, Makanika, in a well-planned drone strike.
The operation, launched from Minembwe, showcased the army's growing capabilities in modern warfare, proving their ability to handle security threats in the region effectively.
Who Was Colonel Makanika?
Colonel Michel Rukunda Makanika was once a member of FARDC before he defected in 2020 to lead the Twirwaneho militia.
Initially a government soldier, he turned against the state after the failure of the Minembwe commune project, which politician Ruberwa supported. With financial backing from the pro-Rwandan Banyamulenge diaspora, Makanika became a warlord, forming alliances with groups like the Burundian rebel faction, Red Tabara.
Despite claiming to fight for the security of the Banyamulenge people, Makanika was ruthless even towards his own community. Reports indicate that he executed Banyamulenge civilians who refused to support his cause and imprisoned parents whose children refused to join his militia. His leadership brought terror rather than protection to the region.
Drone Strike Confirms His End
Residents of Minembwe reported seeing a drone passing through Gahwera airspace before striking Twirwaneho bases. The attack resulted in the deaths of six people, including Makanika himself. Although some initial reports on social media attempted to dismiss the news, multiple sources later confirmed his death.
Twirwaneho fighters acknowledged that their camp was struck by a drone, but some narratives still suggest uncertainty about who launched the attack. Regardless, FARDC’s precision strike has sent a strong message to other rebel groups, particularly as M23 rebels continue their offensive in South Kivu.
The elimination of Makanika is a testament to FARDC's growing military capabilities and strategic planning. The use of drones in warfare has provided a critical advantage, allowing the army to neutralize high-value targets with minimal risk to their forces.
This victory reinforces FARDC’s commitment to restoring stability in eastern DR Congo, where various armed groups, including M23 supported by Rwandan Militias, continue to pose security challenges.
As FARDC strengthens its operations, the death of Makanika serves as a warning to other insurgents attempting to disrupt the peace and sovereignty of DR Congo. The government remains focused on dismantling armed groups and securing the nation’s territorial integrity.
