Authorities in South Kivu have arrested three Chinese nationals involved in illegal mining in Walungu. The suspects were caught attempting to smuggle minerals, including gold, to a neighboring country, according to Governor Jean Jacques Purusi.
The governor explained that a previous shipment of minerals had been exported without the authorities’ knowledge. To prevent further incidents, a monitoring system was put in place, leading to the discovery of the latest smuggling attempt.
“We were alerted that another shipment of minerals from the same site was about to be taken across the border. Acting on this information, we launched an operation to stop it,” said Governor Purusi.
During the operation in Mashango village, a speeding vehicle was intercepted. A thorough search revealed 12 gold bars and nearly $800,000 hidden under the seats. The governor noted that this haul represented about a tenth of the site’s production.
This is the second time Chinese nationals have been arrested for illegal mining activities in the area. The first group was deported to China without the local authorities being informed, causing frustration among officials.
Governor Purusi highlighted the challenges posed by connections between offenders and influential individuals in Kinshasa. To ensure the operation's success, he kept his plans secret, pretending to visit another location before acting quickly.
The suspects, along with the seized gold and cash, were presented to the press and community leaders. Civil society groups praised the operation, calling it a significant step in addressing illegal mining in the region.
